Community, Family and Youth Well-being Programme in Burundi
Burundi is one of the world’s poorest countries, with more than half of the population living in poverty. The country faces several socioeconomic challenges, including food insecurity and poor access to education.
The education system in Burundi does not include pre-primary education, and children with disabilities are not able to access schools due to inadequate facilities. Moreover, pupils who fail examinations are dropped out of school automatically. This results in a system where 7 out of 10 children do not finish secondary school.
Strengthening children’s right to education
Fida’s Country Programme aims to improve access to quality education and a safe living environment for children and youth in Burundi. Fida cooperates with the Community of Pentecostal Churches of Burundi (CEPBU). Work is implemented in the Bubanza, Cibitoke and Ngozi provinces.
Improving Early Childhood Education and promoting entrepreneurship
The Country Programme includes teacher training on early childhood development skills and vocational training for youth who dropped out of school. Children’s Parliaments are established. Young people receive training on entrepreneurship skills in order to create their own employment.
Communities are trained on agribusiness skills and income generating activities so that farmers produce enough food and parents have resources to support their children’s education.
Promoting psychosocial support and peacebuilding activities
Communities receive psychosocial support, as well as information and training about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Social cohesion is promoted through peacebuilding activities. The partner receives training on finance management, administration, and advocacy to effectively campaign for the rights of children and youth.
